It’s been really hard for me to write this review because I love the toy, but hate the price. The Amie is one of three adorable vibrators in Vibratex’s new line, cutely called “The Girls”. This line is the definition of cute, petite, and discreet sex toys – all with some high-quality features that would make it a dream line for a beginner. Each of The Girls is a tiny hand-held vibe just between 2 and 3.5 inches tall. All are made of high-quality silicone. Plus, they are rechargeable, splash proof, and have a good variety of vibrations – with 3 speeds, 3 pulse patterns, and a high speed that is about on par with a beginner’s preference. Each toy comes with a cute bag and a rechargeable port where the toy can sit while it’s plugged into the wall or a USB port. All of these features are fabulous, and make it the perfect beginner’s toy!
But, when I saw that the price for just one of these vibes is $90, I was actually in disbelief. I thought they meant $90 for all three – not just one. For $90, I feel like you should get a much stronger motor with really powerful vibrations – not light and teasing vibrations. I felt like it should definitely be in a lower price range, regardless of it’s higher-quality features, based on it’s power alone. Yet, although it’s not the strongest vibrator, it’s still great for someone who likes lighter vibratons.
But, perhaps I am jaded from trying out so many toys. I thought that maybe my expectations were set just a bit too high. So, I passed the Amie on to my BFF – who has only tried a few cheap vibrators in her life. I didn’t tell her the price or anything about it, and she gave it a try. A few days later, I asked her how she liked it. She squealed, “I love it! I love that it’s rechargeable, splash proof, and has so many different patterns. The material feels really good – and it’s so adorable!” My thoughts exactly! I totally agreed that it was a fabulous vibe. Then, I asked her how much she would be willing to pay for it. After thinking for a bit, she said, “Well, I’ve never paid more than $30 for a vibrator – and I still think that’s pretty expensive. But, since I could re-charge it and not have to pay for batteries, I’d be willing to pay about $50, max.” That’s basically what I had thought, too.
When I told her it was $90, she said, “WHHAAATT?!?! No, no, no, no! I’d NEVER pay that. If I’m going to spend THAT much on a vibrator, I’d get the Hitachi!” As we talked a little more, she told me that at the end of the day, she just wants a vibrator that gets the job done. She just wants to get off, and she doesn’t really care how she gets there. She’s not interested in all the fancy materials and features, as long as it vibrates and vibrates well. She wants a vibrator that will work for her without spending a lot – and while she’s willing to spend a little more than usual for silicone, splash proof, and re-chargeable features – she wasn’t willing to pay that much more without any boost in strength. I’d imagine that most beginners would feel the same way. If you’re going to pay a high price, you don’t want a “beginner’s” vibe!!
I was kind of glad to hear that it wasn’t just me being jaded, and that even a beginner didn’t think it was worth the price. But, I was also sad that I would have to not recommend a super awesome, cute toy – just because it was priced way too high. If it was 30, 40, even 50 dollars – I would whole-heartedly recommend this as one of the best sex toys on the market for beginners. But at $90, you can try a lot of different beginner’s vibrators – or, you can get one really, really, really fabulous vibe. There are $90 vibrators out there that are silicone, rechargeable, and powerful! It’s not worth spending that much money just for a few extra features, without getting a big boost in power along with it.
Edit: After chatting with my friends at GoodVibes, I remembered that there’s a HUGE RANGE of people, all of whom enjoy different kinds of vibrations. If you’re the kind of girl that LOVES light vibrations, and wants a high-quality toy that is silicone, waterproof, rechargeable, and has some variety – I would TOTALLY recommend this toy! It wasn’t for me and my adventurous vagina, but I’m sure that there are girls who would really love this toy.
Size & Design
The Amie is truly adorable in every aspect. It measures in at just under 2.5 inches, making it truly hand-held and travel friendly. It is perfectly sweet and discreet, and would be easy to store inside it’s pouch in your nightstand. It has a generally round shape with a curved and slightly pointed tip (described as a “droplet”). The shape makes it perfect for pin-point stimulation at the tip, or broad vibration along the curved side. It’s a great shape for someone who is new to vibrations and doesn’t want to over-load their senses.
It is lightweight and easy to clean. It is made of high-quality silicone, which is an incredible body-safe material that is easy to clean. Since it is splash proof, you can simply run it under warm water and clean with anti-bacterial soap. Just don’t submerge it entirely, as it will ruin the vibration mechanics. You can also use toy wipes or toy cleaner – just don’t use silicone lube, as it may degrade the material. Water-based lube is preferred!
Vibration & Power
The vibrations of the Amie are decent for a beginner’s vibe. While they’re not powerful enough to give me and orgasm – they would likely be powerful enough to a beginner. My friend loved these vibrations, and found them to be about as powerful as her other inexpensive vibrators. Yet, the vibration power is not as exciting as the different patterns for this toy. Aside from the 3 vibration settings, there are 3 unique patterns:
- Steady Low Vibration
- Steady Medium Vibration
- Steady High Vibration
- High Quick Pulse, High Steady Pulse
- Gradual Low to High Steady Pulses
- Gradual Low to High Quick Pulses, Two Quick High Pulses
This kind of variety would be fabulous for a newbie just starting to explore different patterns, and find out what she likes.
Although the size, shape, and vibration patterns are great for a beginner – there is nothing “beginner” about the special features of this toy. I love that it uses a high-quality matte silicone, with a cute silicone button to easily control the vibrations. I also love that it’s splash proof for easy cleaning and totally rechargeable, so that you don’t have to worry about batteries. Rechargeable vibes are fabulous – but The Girls line takes it a bit further with a super cute charging port that can fit both a USB and a A/C wall plug, depending on your preference. It’s very convenient and easy! It also comes with a cute stylish bag for travel or storage.
Pros & Cons
- Gorgeous, smooth, silky silicone
- Easy to clean
- Easily rechargeable via USB or A/C
- A variety of speeds and patterns
- Simple and sleek design
- Travel friendly
- All speeds and light and buzzy
This will likely be one of the hardest reviews I ever write. I really love all the features of this toy, and I think it would be a perfect toy for a beginner. It has a lot of variety and nice, light vibrations for a beginner. But, I don’t think that a beginner should be paying $90 for a toy – especially a toy with “beginner” vibrations, regardless of the other high-quality features. At the end of the day, we’re looking for a vibrator. If you’re going to spend that much money, the vibration should be more powerful – not just the handy features. I would recommend that a beginner spend less money or find a stronger toy that will still please them after they graduate from their beginner status. On the flip side, if you’re a girl that knows you like light vibrations, and want to step up to a more high-quality toy, I’d definitely recommend The Girls.
