With the holiday season in our midst, you’ve probably already planned which party (or parties!) you’ll attend. You may have a date already lined up or you may be planning to pick from the patch when you arrive and get a chance to mingle your way through the crowds of people. We all want to spend the holiday season with someone but it’s important to remember to stay safe too. Here are some important tips to remember when you’re out enjoying yourself this holiday season to ensure your staying as safe as possible too!

1. Choose the Right Party

If you’ve been invited to a few parties and are deciding which party to attend, choose wisely. If you feel uncomfortable attending a certain party for any reason, don’t go to that party. Always trust your instincts and if you have a bad feeling about anything, choose a different party to attend.

2. Bring Condoms

Even if you aren’t planning on getting laid this year, it’s better to be prepared and it not happen than to not be prepared and end up with an STI or unintended pregnancy. Don’t count on your other partner bringing a condom because who can you trust better than yourself? If they end up bringing a condom too that’s great but at least you know you’re prepared if you have one yourself too. Better yet, throw a few in your purse just in case you one breaks or you need some when you least expect it!  Not to mention, even if you’re not hooking up, you never know when your bestie may need to borrow protection.

3. Drink Lots of Water

Before and after drinking alcohol, it’s important to drink lots of water to keep hydrated. By staying hydrated before drinking your bodyweight in alcohol, you can alleviate some of the hangover pains the next day and also help yourself from not getting as sick later that night.

4. Eat Dinner

The most important meal isn’t breakfast. The most important meal is the meal you eat before drinking so much that you lose count of how many drinks you’ve had. Although you may be looking forward to getting blackout drunk as quickly as possible, the longer food sits in your stomach, the longer it takes the alcohol to get into your bloodstream. So drink and have fun but remember to eat your dinner first.

5. Keep an Eye on Your Drink

Eat, drink, and be merry! It’s very important to keep an eye on your drink the entire time. If you need to go to the restroom have a trusted friend watch it for you and if you accidentally lose track of your drink for any reason; throw it away and order a new one. It’s better to spend a little more money buying a safe drink than risk being roofied this holiday season.

6. Make a Pact with Your Friends

While no one wants to think about something terrible happening, it’s still a good idea to make a pact with your close friends to watch each other close all night. Although you all may be drinking it’s important to keep an eye on each other. The last thing you want to do is spend the holiday season with your friend hurt or not with you anymore. Watch each other and consider agreeing on a safe word to use if you find yourselves in a bad situation.

7. Get a Cab

Instead of designating a driver that’s not allowed to drink so they can drive everyone home; play it safe and get a cab. Have everyone chip in some money and take a cab to the party or the bar you’re going to, and take a cab back home after. Your designated driver could be tempted to drink and then you’re all either stranded or in a very unsafe position riding in a vehicle with someone who’s been drinking. Play it safe and let everyone enjoy themselves.

The holiday season is fun and it’s arguably the most wonderful time of the year! While you should enjoy yourself as much as possible it’s very important to remain safe too!
