Born in New York City and raised in Lake Placid, New York, Lana spent most of her early years in the heart of the nation. Despite going to boarding school for three years in Connecticut, she found her way back to New York when she went to Fordham in the Bronx and then moved to Brooklyn for four more years. Living in Manhattan and having gone to boarding school in Connecticut for three years myself, I know how crazy it can make a girl. In fact, Lana was sent to the Kent School in Connecticut for her alcohol dependence (although I became alcohol dependent at boarding school!). She references her country in pictures and songs – or even in her beautiful take on Marilyn Monroe’s “Happy Birthday Mr. President” in National Anthem. It seems that her American roots are heavily tied into her music and who doesn’t love a patriotic gal? She even made her start in the music industry performing in local clubs in Brooklyn, the way any hipster would do it. Let’s face it, if Lana wanted to rely on looks her entire life, she could. Instead, she chose the traditional route of going to college to get her education. My favorite word and concept in the world is “zen” which is attaining enlightenment. So when I’m in my dorm room filled with christmas lights and a trippy tapestry, Lana is my favorite girl to put on. Every note and word puts you in a better place of peacefulness and serenity. Cheesy, I know – but I dare you to listen to her and not feel like you’re floating on a cloud. As my roommate Kelly says, she “brought back the 60’s old Hollywood glam lifestyle and is so posh and has this cool edge about her.” A man’s favorite fantasy and a girl’s idol, Lana brings zen to people all over the world. Every time I hear her voice in The Great Gatsby, my heart can’t help but turn to mush the way guys react when they see her all too gorgeous naked photos in magazines. Every inch of her body seems to be relaxed and it’s a wonderfully contagious feeling. In 2012, when she was GQ’s woman of the year, she said, “It’s amazing what happens when you put your interests out into the universe and make it known what you want – you just have to know what it is.” Studying philosophy clearly had a mentally stimulating affect on her, knowing more about her relationship with herself, others, and the universe. This is a great example of enlightenment and Lana shows us that through struggles, we can find ourselves and create peace and happiness in our own world.
Letting Loose
It’s no question that Lana loves to have a good time, which is why it’s so refreshing to see a celebrity who doesn’t care who sees her indulging in a couple calming habits. She’s openly been smoking cigarettes during performances and in several music videos, which shows people that even celebrities need to control their stress sometimes with a nice, long drag. Mentioning weed and alcohol in her songs makes her words real because they represent her lifestyle as a previous alcoholic and she even claims her alcoholism was the inspiration for her song, Born to Die. She does admit that she hasn’t had a drink in years due to her prior problem, but it plays a big role in her past. She tells GQ in her interview, “when I write about the thing that I’ve lost I feel like I’m writing about alcohol because that was the first love of my life. Sure, there have been people, but it’s really alcohol.” Let’s face it, a lot of slutty girls get hooked into the crazy wild ways of smoking and drinking – it’s a common thing for a large amount of people. The fact that Lana embraces those things in her music makes it relatable and real, we all just want to break away from reality and have a good time!
Retro Sex Appeal
It’s clear that Lana isn’t shy about her body and in fact has a lot of fun showing it off in photo shoots and videos. Although she receives criticism about her supposed plastic surgery and the exposure of her body, she’s just focusing on making good music. Any slutty girl knows how to handle her haters and proudly walk with her head held high no matter what and Lana proves that talent can overpower and scrutinizing voice.
