Meghan Trainor – NØ

03/11

It might come as a shock based on our previous discussions regarding Meghan Trainor, but the title of this article isn’t negating her. In fact, Miss Trainor, despite her previous claims of not being a feminist, has released a new jam that’s definitely my new girl power anthem.

Why We Love It

We may have some beef with Meghan Trainor, but her newest hit single has some serious girl power vibes.  Yes, you read that right. The title of this article isn’t a diss towards Meghan – it’s the name of her new single, which I love. With a sound reminding me of my favorite 90’s dance ballads, or, more recently, Fifth Harmony, and a “no means no” message, there’s nothing I don’t love about this song. Miss Trainor might claim she’s not a feminist and may have made some problematic comments in the past, but anyone who can throw down some feel good lyrics about rejecting fuckboys is alright in my book, or at least gets a pass this time around. 😉

Favorite Lyrics

“All my ladies listen up
If that boy ain’t giving up
Lick your lips and swing your hips
Girl all you gotta say is…

My name is no
My sign is no
My number is no”

“If I want a man, then I’mma get a man
But it’s never my priority”

The Takeaway

As women, we often feel either bad or scared when we reject guys at the bar. Fuckboys are pushy, while “nice guys” are mopey. In reality, no one should feel bad about rejecting someone kindly – and saying “no” is perfectly acceptable. Once someone gets insistent, being straightforward with your “no” is the best way to go. Trainor’s song is an empowering song embracing a woman’s ability and choice to say “no” in a world that so often ignores us when we use that little, two letter word. So while you’re out there having fun and saying “yes” to whoever you want, remember “NØ” is always an option, too.
