STDs. They’re the one thing that scares us slutty girls most, besides getting pregnant of course. Thanks to the internet and the hundreds of sites that allow us to self diagnose our symptoms, STDs have become even more stressful. Even though we hate to talk about them, its important to stay knowledgeable… so you can stay slutty and smart.

Herpes

“You can get herpes from sitting on public toilet seats.”

The Herpes Simplex Virus is divided into two different types, HSV-1 and HSV-2. HSV-1 causes infections almost exclusively in the mouth, throat, face and eye areas, while HSV-2 primarily causes genital infections. Both strains are transmitted by direct sexual contact, and can not survive on non-living surfaces like toilet seats. But, blisters do not need to be present to contract the virus. Because most cases see only mild symptoms, it has become one of the most common STDs. More than 700,000 new cases of herpes appear in the U.S. each year. Contrary to popular belief herpes is not a curable disease, once you contract it, you will carry it for life. This is a scary thought, but with the right medications and proper up keep you can still have a fulfilling sex life and meaningful relationships in the future.

Gonorrhea

“It will go away on its own and you don’t need to worry about it.”

Gonorrhea is a bacterium caused STD, and though it is curable, it can cause serious damage to the body. It affects multiple areas in men and women, including the mouth, throat, eye, urethra and anus. Gonorrhea is transmitted by vaginal, anal, or oral sex with someone who is already infected. Like herpes, many of the symptoms, such as painful urination and unusual discharge, can be easily overlooked, leading it to be another very common disease. Around 800,000 new cases are discovered in the U.S. annually. Yet untreated cases can cause serious health problems, including Pelvic Inflammation Disease in women and Epididymitis in men. More recently, drug-resistant strains have been increasing, making it ever more pressing to seek treatment early and never take symptoms lightly.

Syphilis

“Once you contract Syphilis, you can’t get it again.”

Syphilis is another curable STD caused by bacteria. It is less commonly contracted than gonorrhea because it is only transmittable by direct contact with a preexisting infectious sore. The near 60,000 new cases found each year bring a set of serious complications. The appearance of a single sore at the sight of contact is usually the only signal of the primary stage of this disease. It is not until the secondary stage where people will start to experience rough reddish skin rashes and larger sores on the body. Symptoms such as fever, swollen lymph glands, sore throat, and even hair and weight loss can start to occur at this stage too. The scariest part of syphilis, which helps it earn the name of the “silent” STD, is its latent stage. At this point in the disease, symptoms can go away, and stay away for as little as a year to as long as 30 years. It is after this period of dormancy where the disease can flare up causing serious health issues. These issues include difficult muscle movement, paralysis, blindness and dementia.

Curable or not, STDs are not something to be taken lightly. Being a slutty girl doesn’t mean you have to be a stupid girl. Stay educated and use protection.
