While much has been known and accepted about the male orgasm for years, the female orgasm (or orgasm for anyone with a vagina) has been considered a myth, a lie, and an impossibility in the past. It’s now acknowledged that a person with a vagina can not only have multiple orgasms, but they can also have different types! Not even literature about orgasms can agree on how many different types of orgasms there are, ranging from two to eleven!

What is an orgasm?

In basic terms, an orgasm is the climax of sexual excitement, characterized by intensely pleasurable feelings centered in the genitals and, in men, experienced as an accompaniment to ejaculation. For a person with a vagina, an orgasm is a combination of two things. The first has do with the fact that as a person with a vagina/clitoris gets turned-on, they build up muscle tension around the pelvis. During an orgasm, all this built-up tension (or myotonia, if you really want to get technical) releases at the same time! The person is flooded with hormones that create intensely pleasurable feelings. These are often centered around the genitals, but they can be felt all over. No matter the type or how the orgasm is reached, it involves hormones and tension.

Editor’s note: We strive to use gender neutral language whenever possible. At times, this post will use the word “female” to describe bodies with clitorises and vaginas, referring solely to genital presentation.

While the research on orgasms is contradictory, it’s definitely worthwhile to explore some types of orgasms. The types we’ll focus on are clitoral, vaginal, G-spot, A-spot, breast, mental, blended, and multiple orgasms.

1. Clitoral Orgasm

The clitoris has 8,000 nerve endings that can create, arguably, the most intense orgasms. It is the most sensitive area on the female body. The clitoral orgasm is the most common form of orgasm experienced by a person with a clitoris. The clitoral orgasm is regarded by history to be a constant way for a female to orgasm. The orgasm occurs when the clitoris is stimulated, muscular tension builds, and there are vaginal contractions and a release of the energy. The intensity of the orgasm can be minute or extreme and last twenty to more than sixty seconds. People can also have repeated clitoral orgasms lasting for many minutes in a row.

The most intensely pleasurable feelings start within the clitoris and send waves of pleasure throughout the body. The clitoris is so important to receiving pleasure that sexual arousal is always felt there on some level. That is why the clitoris is so responsive to certain kinds of touch. Some may prefer a light touch while others may require much stronger and firmer stimulation. For some, it’s so sensitive that touching the clitoris directly is often uncomfortable and unbearable. After an orgasm, the clit may become extremely sensitive to the point of being painful.

Having your partner make big circles with their fingers that include the shaft, labia, and upper part of the clitoral hood can increase pleasure and sensitivity before directly stimulating the clitoris. The clitoris can easily be stimulated by fingers, a vibrator, your partner’s tongue, or the tip of their dick. The best way to achieve this type or orgasm is to have slow initial contact, then to increase speed and firmness – and as always, communicate.

2. Vaginal Orgasm

This kind of orgasm begins in the vagina and either stays focused in the pelvic and lower stomach areas, or spreads from there. The uterus, pelvic muscles, and even anus may begin to contract during this orgasm. Those contractions are quite strong and may actually push out anything that was stimulating the vagina. This kind of orgasm takes longer to achieve, at about twenty to twenty-five minutes on average. It can be achieved through rhythmic thrusting and finding out the best position to reach it.

Many people describe it as “less intense” than a clitoral orgasm, but more deeply felt. They feel it as a pressure that slowly grows and explodes deep inside the vagina. Where clitoral orgasms are all about the touching, caressing, and stroking of sensitive spots outside the body, their vaginal counterparts happen on the inside. The vaginal orgasm can occur via stimulation of the G-Spot, but it is also achieved through stimulation of the nerve endings inside the vagina.

For many, pressure on the frontal wall of the inner vagina or deep inside the vagina feels undeniably good. Debate exists around whether the vaginal orgasm is stimulation of the G-Spot alone or is an orgasm in its own right.

3. G-Spot Orgasm

This is a much debated orgasm, to the point where some doctors believe it does not exist! This is due to the constant dispute as to whether the G-Spot exists. Thirty percent of people with vaginas claim they can have the big O from having the famous erogenous zone stimulated through penetration alone.

This orgasm begins in the G-Spot (which is located 2-3 inches in the vagina) and the sensation may stay there while climaxing or it may powerfully explode through the whole body, causing other body part to convulse, such as the legs or stomach. This kind of female orgasm takes some time to build (again, 20-25 minutes). Many describe it as a very special, deeply sensual pleasure, which builds until their whole lower stomach and pelvic area explodes. Often, they are carried away for quite some time by the powerful wave of euphoric energy and don’t even realize where they are and what is going on around them.

This spot feels different in texture than the rest of the vagina. It is spongy and coarser in texture. During sexual arousal, the tissue surrounding the urethra becomes engorged. In fact, this process is very similar to arousal for those with penises. As a result, the urethral sponge becomes firm if you touch it. In other words, this is a kind of female hard-on.

There are different ways of stimulating the G-Spot. One way is by having the right sex toys; a a vibrator that is shaped specifically for G-Spot massage. These vibrators have a unique appearance, as they usually feature a flattened or widened surface at their tips, which focuses vibrations and pressure to where they’re wanted most. Rhythmic pushing or circular friction movements are the best for achieving this kind of orgasm. One position that is good for reaching this sexual peak is from the back or through fingering, or using a pillow under the ass to elevate the pelvic region. It can also be stimulated by both partners lying on their sides while facing each other, with their legs intertwined comfortably (think of two pairs of crisscrossed scissors). Keep your parts aligned and make sure he rubs against the front wall of your vagina.

4. A-Spot Orgasm

This orgasm is rarely mentioned or supported by many articles. The A-Spot orgasm is achieved by stimulation of an area deep in the vagina (about 4-5 inches) on the front wall. It is the same wall where the G-Spot is situated. In other words, this is a patch of sensitive tissue at the inner front end of the vaginal tube, between the cervix and the bladder. After an orgasm, the A-Spot does not become too sensitive and you can easily continue stimulation, bringing your partner to new heights of pleasure. This is why people with vaginas are able to achieve multiple orgasms.

Many find the feeling incredibly pleasurable, while some may not like it at all. Keep this in mind when experimenting. Many women describe this orgasm as a kind of soft electricity bringing them to a sharp, erotic climax. Some individuals find this orgasm very similar to the G-Spot, while some find it closer to an extremely strong vaginal orgasm.

The best way to achieve this type of orgasm is missionary position, where your partner repeats a series of short-thrusts very deeply. It can also be achieved with a hand. Use the same technique you use for stimulating the G-Spot, but in this case, go as deep as your fingers can reach. Simply said, you just try to “scoop it out” with your middle finger.

5. Breast Orgasm

This kind of orgasm occurs during a peak of stimulation to the breasts. The nipples connect to nerves in the female genitals and many feel a direct connection with their clitoris when their nipples are stimulated. Many feel increased sexual excitement when their nipples are stimulated, but not all of them can experience the breast orgasm. This depends very much on how sensitive their nipples are.

To increase chances of this type of orgasm, it is important to stimulate the nipples through licking, pinching, twisting and sucking. You can also increase stimulation by playing with hot and cold temperatures.

6. Mental Orgasm (or Cumming on Command)

This orgasm is again not widely accepted or supported by researchers. This kind of orgasm can happen during visual and auditory stimulation. Examples of visual stimulation include movies, videos, or sexual behavior exhibited in front of others, or a look by a partner. Auditory stimulation can come from films, but can also be a word used to command orgasm. The orgasm is often felt as intense concentration. Then the message travels from the mind through the body, ending in stimulation of the clitoris and/or internally in the vagina.

This type of orgasm takes time and full concentration to achieve. Training can include watching the stimulus the word being said each time the woman orgasms, until the word or visual stimulation is linked to the orgasm itself. Slowly over time, the word or visual has such a strong connection that it can cause an orgasm. But this orgasm can only occur with preparation, practice and training. This type of orgasm can also be connected to objects, whereby the object is given the same connection to orgasms, therefore creating the orgasm.

People often experience fatigue after this type of orgasm due to the intense mental focus on top of the physical orgasm.

7. Blended or Combination Orgasms

Sometimes a person with a vagina has just one kind of orgasm in one part of the body, in one way, but often two or more kinds of orgasm are combined in succession or in tandem. There are a lot of moving parts in a blended orgasm: two erotically erogenous zones, simultaneously stimulated to bring a whole wave of sensations. These can be in absolutely any combination. During a single sex session, one might experience all different kinds of orgasm, is a combination of blended or single orgasms. In fact, some of the above mentioned orgasms are connected with clitoral or vaginal orgasms.

Experts say a combined clitoral and vaginal orgasm is the most powerful finale; it can be twice as strong and intense as either orgasm is by itself. To reach this blended orgasm, a cowgirl position works best as either partner can stimulate the clitoris while thrusting or fucking. Missionary also works well for this as the top angles their hips slightly so the base of their penis is rubbing against the clitoris as they thrust. “In this position, he’s not really thrusting up and down, but rather grinding against your pelvic bone,” says Ruberg.

8. Multiple Orgasms

Multiple orgasms happen one right after the next, not at different times in one session (although those are great too). Studies show that multiple orgasms are possible for some if they can withstand being continuously stimulated after their first (and second and…) climaxes.

Multiple orgasms can occur as a clitoral orgasm or any of the above mentioned internal vaginal orgasms. The best way to achieve these is to continue the stimulation like a roller coaster; build up to an orgasm, slow down, and build again. From there, begin intercourse, which can lead to multiple vaginal or blended orgasms, using the same technique of slowing down and speeding up, as long as you keep the stimulation going and your arousal high. Some do not need to slow down and can keep orgasming from continued stimulation at the same intensity.
