I’ve always been intrigued by coconut-based lubricants, especially those of the coconut oil variety, but I’ve never had the opportunity to try one before. So when I heard about Coconu, a company that not only uses coconut in their products but also cares about ethical manufacturing and natural ingredients, I knew that I was in luck! There are too many lubes on the market that contain parabens, glycerin, alcohols, or other ingredients that I don’t particularly like to put inside my vagina. When it comes to a product as intimate as a lubricant, I want to support companies that are committed to ensuring their products are 100% body-safe and Coconu fits that bill. I didn’t experience any irritation from using either of their lubes and I know that the high-quality ingredients in the formulas are the reason why.

I also love that Coconu, the company, donates 10% of their profits to the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance. Women’s (and other folks’ with vaginas) reproductive health can often be an overlooked topic and seeing Coconu recognize that is refreshing. I stan a brand that gives back.

Water-Based Lubricant

Coconu’s water-based offering uses coconut water as its primary ingredient. As a result, it also has a faint coconut taste to it; so if you end up ingesting any you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the flavor. Because it’s a water-based lubricant, it’s also extremely easy to clean up after using it.  The water-based version of Coconu is also pH-balanced to mimic a natural vaginal pH.

I found this coconut water version to be very soothing on my skin and the feeling was quite natural, though the consistency was a bit runny. I really wanted to love this lubricant and at first, I did; it was soft and slippery, perfect for use with either a toy or partner. However, I found it to get sticky a lot faster than other water-based lubes I’ve tried. This tacky feeling was unpleasant and uncomfortable, though adding additional moisture quickly and easily revitalized its original smooth feeling.

Oil-Based Lubricant

Fortunately, it didn’t matter that I didn’t love Coconu’s water-based formula because its oil-based counterpart lived up to and surpassed all of my expectations! Though the name Coconu might lead you to believe this lube is made solely from coconuts, coconut oil is but one of many organic oils that are blended together to create the perfect formula. With other ingredients like almond oil, cocoa seed butter, and shea butter, I found this lubricant to be super moisturizing. It felt light and luxurious even just on my fingertips.

Coconu’s oil-based version is much slicker than the water-based version and is extremely long-lasting. I didn’t find that it ever became sticky.  This lube also takes on body-heat quickly and easily and as a result felt very natural and comfortable to use.  For these same reasons, I think it would also make a great massage oil… Though I didn’t test out this theory.

Please note that as with any oil-based lubricant, this type of Coconu is not safe for use with condoms.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • all-natural, body-safe ingredients
  • ethical and cruelty-free manufacturing
  • vegan
  • natural, slippery feeling
  • oil-based version is extremely long-lasting

Cons:

  • water-based version becomes sticky easily
  • oil-based version cannot be used with condoms

Overall

While I can’t say that I absolutely adored the water-based version of Coconu, I think it would be a great choice for someone looking for a vegan lube or anyone with sensitivities to less natural ingredients. Coconu’s company practices and morals are also a huge plus. As for the oil-based Coconu lubricant, I loved it and will almost certainly buy another bottle when it runs out. (Though I imagine that won’t be for quite some time, because a little goes a long way!) I would recommend Coconu’s oil-based formula to anyone looking for a long-lasting and deeply moisturizing lubricant. It’s perfect for use with toys and would also be great for partnered sex where condoms are not involved.
