When I was given the opportunity to review the Hello Touch X by JimmyJane, I was a little bit terrified – but in an excited way! The original Hello Touch is a versatile, fingertip vibrator and while I’m not the world’s hugest fan of vibrators, I was more than a little bit intrigued about the new added feature that the Hello Touch X has over its predecessor: electrostimulation. I didn’t have any prior experience with e-stim, but I was ready (and nervous!) to experiment and try it out!

Unique Fingertip Design

The Hello Touch X is a wearable vibrator and electrostimulation toy. It has a neoprene wristband, which also doubles as a pocket to hold the control, and two pairs of connecting fingertip pods. The first set of pods are vibrating and can be worn on either the front or back of the fingers, wearing them on the front of the fingers allows for direct contact, whereas wearing them on the back causes the finger itself to vibrate and allows for more delicate vibrations. The second set of pods are electric, that is to say, they shock you! These pods must be worn on the front of the fingers. Both sets of pods are made of silicone (the e-stim pods are also stainless steel) and have tiny, stretchy bands to hold them in place.  Although the bands were quite stretchy, I found them too be a little too tight once in place. Wearing the pods was a bit uncomfortable on my fingertips, and users with larger fingers would likely experience even more discomfort.

Rather than being run on batteries, the Hello Touch X is rechargeable. It plugs into any USB port and once fully charged can run for 40 minutes on the vibration mode or 3 hours on the e-stim mode. For some users, the 40 minute vibration duration may not be long enough. Furthermore, it is recommended that you charge the battery-pack for 8 hours before your first use. As someone who doesn’t always plan ahead, I found this to be ridiculously inconvenient – there were many times when I wanted to try out the Hello Touch X, but couldn’t because I hadn’t charged it yet, forgot to plug it in, and didn’t have time to once I was interested in playing.  The battery pack doesn’t do very well at holding a charge either, you can’t charge it up and then expect it to be good to go for your next play session. In my experience, the battery was always dead when I wanted to use it and I had to charge it immediately before each use in order for it to work properly.

A Single, Light Vibration

I did not enjoy the vibration mode of the Hello Touch X. While this is probably due in part to the fact that I don’t love vibrators to begin with, I have several qualms with this toy in particular. To begin with, there is only one level of vibration to choose from (as opposed to the multiple levels available with the e-stim pods); for a toy of this caliber and at this price point, I felt that having a single vibration level was extremely disappointing. In addition to this, the vibrations are fairly light and quite buzzy. On the positive side though, the vibrations are also fairly quiet, slightly quieter than a phone’s vibrations. Despite their low intensity though, the vibrations were almost too much to handle on fingers, so I’m not sure I’d want them to be any more powerful. We’ve labeled other vibes as being clit numbing, but this one is finger numbing! I found it to be particularly unpleasant when my fingers were close together and the two pods touched. If you don’t mind pulsating fingers though, you might love the vibrating pods as a part of foreplay – the buzzy sensation is well-suited for teasing.

Electrostimulation

Unlike the vibration, there are several variations to choose from when it comes to the electrostimulation. There are ten levels of intensity and six modes of stimulation.

Be sure to put both pods on your skin before turning on the e-stim. Do not turn the e-stim on, and then touch your skin. This is not only painful, causing a strong zapping sensation, but can also be dangerous.

I’ll admit that I was extremely nervous to turn the Hello Touch X on for the first time and I definitely had to psych myself up for the initial attempt, as it turned out though, this was completely unnecessary. When I turned the e-stim pods on for the first time, the sensation was so small that I wondered if I was imagining it, turning it up to level 2 proved that the toy was indeed working but it was still barely perceptible. However, this is normal, as the instructions state that many users don’t feel anything until level 3. This proved to be largely true for me though it wasn’t until level 5 that I found it to be pleasurable at all. The electric sensation itself is a one-of-a-kind feeling.

It’s difficult to accurately describe the sensation but it actually feels very similar to that of a regular vibrator, though the vibrations feel as though they’re coming from beneath the surface of your skin rather than from the toy itself, as if it’s just buzzing with a tingling, somewhat electric sensation.

It is suggested that you use a water-based lube with the Hello Touch X, as a conductor for the electricity. This allows the sensations the toy provides to “radiate” through the area, rather than being localized to where the toy is being applied, which adds to the uniqueness of e-stim’s sensations. Overall, I thought the e-stim pods were really cool, and definitely something worth checking out if you’re looking for a new experience.

Safety

Because of the electrical nature of this toy, you should not use it in any of the following scenarios without consulting your doctor:

• Do not use if you are pregnant
• Do not use to massage the stomach or abdomen if pain is present
• Do not use on swollen, inflamed, or broken skin
• Do not use if you have unexplained calf pain
• Do not use near the eyes, upper neck, or skull area
• Do not us if you suffer from poor circulation
• Do not use if you have a pacemaker or suffer from heart disease
• Do not use if you have a metal (copper) IUD
• Do not use if you have epilepsy
• Do not use near any metal piercings

In addition to the above, it is not advised to use the Hello Touch X for more than 15 minutes. As an added safety feature, the toy will shut itself off after 12 minutes of constant e-stim use, so you won’t have to worry about losing track of time. Additionally, it is important to place BOTH pods on your body BEFORE turning them on, when using the e-stim mode. Most e-stim toys also recommend that you not use them anywhere above the waist, but I wasn’t able to find any warnings about this on the Jimmy Jane site, or in any of the enclosed instructions. (I personally did not use the Hello Touch X above the waist – better safe than sorry!)

Editor’s Note: JimmyJane’s e-stim manual is not comprehensive, and has some false information. E-stim should NOT be used above the waist, on the face, neck, breasts, or nipples (even though it’s shown in JimmyJane’s manual) – as it can cause dangerous heart beat fluctuations. It should also NOT be used anywhere on your spine, upper back, or shoulders, either. Basically, do not use it anywhere above the waist – and especially do not use it through the head, heart, or throat. You also should NOT stimulate on both sides of your body at the same time. i.e.: never stimulate both nipples, both shoulders, etc. This causes one side to be a negative charge, the other a positive charge, and current will go across the heart or spine. Also, be sure to use BOTH pods at once (in the same area) rather than a single pod, as that can also be dangerous. Be sure to place pods on the body FIRST, then turn on the power, as it is also dangerous to touch the body with the e-stim without prior contact.

Unfortunately, JimmyJane does not thoroughly address this in their manual. We recommend the safety resources at Estim and Mystim for more information.

Pros & Cons

Overall

I would definitely recommend this toy, for the experience, if nothing else – it provides a really neat sensation and is a good toy for people interested in getting started with electrosex. I can’t say I love the Hello Touch X though, the vibrator function just didn’t do it for me. As someone who is passionate about sexual health and safety, I was also extremely disappointed in the lack of comprehensive safety instructions, but the toy itself is very well made and safe to use if you know what precautions to take.
