I’ve tried paddles and whips… restraints and blindfolds… but of all the BDSM gear I’ve fantasized of trying, gags somehow seemed the most… intense. The feeling of being tied up, fighting against restraints, and being punished with a nice flogging is definitely mind-boggling… but the idea of losing all verbal control feels like the ultimate surrender. From the moment your mouth is filled with a gag, you can no longer express yourself and completely lose the ability to say no. All that’s left is the muddled moans and protests, so covered by a barrier until they’re barely legible.

Of course, in BDSM and bondage play, it’s always necessary to have a safe-word; a word that the moment when it is uttered, all play stops immediately, and some care is taken. When using a gag, it’s equally important to have some kind of signal for “stop”, whether it be a firm shake of your head with an “UH-Uh” sound, or tapping out, or a combination of signs that signal “stop”. Safe words are the key to safety – in case something is too tight, hurting, or if you simply can’t take anymore (physically or emotionally).

But, having that safety in place doesn’t necessarily detract from the excitement and taboo of full surrender to your partner. While playing the helpless fantasy, having a gag is one prop you don’t want to skip out on. In my early days of trying taboo, I used clothes as a make-shift gag, but the feeling wasn’t enough. Then, I went to my local sex shop and picked up a simple rubber gag. I was disappointed to find that it didn’t fit my mouth quiet right, hurt my jaw, and that the ball couldn’t be removed from the leather head band for proper cleaning. I searched for the right size ball, and especially one that was detachable, but the options seemed really slim… until I came across Tantus’s Beginner Ball Gag to review – which is, of course, my new favorite! Tantus can simply do no wrong.

About My Reviews & Ratings

Material

My favorite part about all of Tantus’s toys is their committed to only using 100% high-quality, medical-grade silicone in their ultra-premium blend. Tantus’s silicone is incredibly divine and the definition of quality. It is known as the safest material on the market because it’s non-toxic, hypoallergenic, phthalate free, odorless, and tasteless (very important for a gag) – and can also be cleaned with no problem. Simply wash it with gentle antibacterial soap and warm water between uses, or 10% bleach it, boil it, or put it in the dishwasher for a deeper clean. This particular gag is very easy to clean, because you can detach the silicone gag portion and clean it separately without fear of getting the leather wet. The leather straps can be wiped down with a damp cloth and then dried, or with a leather cleaning solution.

This particular silicone is more matte than other Tantus toys. The only glossy part is the exterior shiny finish on the external part of the gag. It gives the gag a nice comfortable, somewhat plush feel – while the outer glossy part is shiny and bright (though, it is a huge dust magnet). If you’re storing it, just be sure to clean it thoroughly before use to make sure there’s no dust or germs (and that the natural leather strap didn’t get any of it’s remnants on it). The only down side about this material is that my teeth make an awkward squeaking noise against the silicone, which is just hard to avoid. If that little noise will drive you nuts, this isn’t the gag for you… but for me, I was so lost swimming in pleasure that I barely thought about that little annoyance at all. Mine is pink, but you can also get it in black or red!

Design and Fit

The design of this gag is a bit non-conformist. Most gags are simple round balls that are held between your teeth, with your lips wrapped around them and your tongue pushed against the edge. The ball is slightly fitted upward to fit between your back upper teeth. This gag is shaped more like a pacifier, fitted inside your mouth so that your teeth and lips wrap past the large ball and around a smaller edge. This design has a few benefits and drawbacks. On the bright side, it makes it very easy to breath around. It’s also great if you can’t keep your mouth open for a long time, but still want that feeling of a gag. On the flip side, it also makes your moans and protests lest muffled. It can also compress down on your tongue, causing you to gag a bit if you’re not careful or want to turn it upside down. (Which, admittedly, can be a turn on). Though, I imagine this would be irritating if you have a tongue ring. It can also look like a pacifier rather than the standard ball gag, which is a turn off for me and my partner, but would be a turn on for those into age-play.

The ball of the gag itself is 1.5 inches across and 5 inches around at it’s widest point. It is insertable for just about 2.25 inches. The outer mouth piece is 3 inches across and 2 inches high, with a hole in each side to allow for the leather head band to keep it in place. The natural leather band (which has the natural leather smell that many find appealing) has a buckle snap on either end to secure the gag in place. The length of the band is adjusted by two velcro strips (4 and 5 inches long) at the back. It is just under 25 inches around at full length, and just under 15 inches at it’s smallest. The perfect size for me is with both velcro pieces fully covering each other, with a total length of 20 inches. The leather is super soft and comfortable along my face, and the band is very flexible to accommodate your shape. The velcro (when hidden) stays totally out of the way, so my hair doesn’t get stuck on it at all, and it doesn’t rake against my skin. You can also quickly remove the gag with the velcro or snaps if necessary.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Gag is removable for easy cleaning and sanitizing
  • 100% body-safe silicone gag
  • Adjustable strap
  • Comfortable design (for some)

Cons

  • Pacifier style gag may be uncomfortable for some, especially those with a strong gag reflex

Overall

This is a fabulous ball gag for beginners who crave an into to gags without full surrender. This gag allows you to have your words and protests muffled to a in-discernible “mmmffffm MMMFFFMM!” language, without fully silencing your ability to communicate, breath, or moan. If you want a more restrictive experience with less jaw movement and more silence, there are other (larger) balls on there. Unfortunately, this ball lacks some of the staple pleasures most gags boast. It looks like a pacifier which your teeth and lips wrap around, rather than an open-mouth gag where your jaw is forced open. It also can depress your tongue and make you gag or hurt a piercing. Yet, I still love this gag and find that it perfectly fits my preferences and comfort levels when I’m looking to be quieted, but not silenced – comfortable – and have a bit of an oral fixation to toy with me. I really love that it is entirely body-safe and easy to clean, comfortable to wear, and easy to remove. This gag should last a very long time, and I’m definitely glad about that!!
