Have you ever wandered into the sex portion of your local bookstore to look at those encyclopedias of sex positions? If you haven’t, and you’re a newbie at this whole sex thing—don’t.

On one hand, about 85% of those positions are based on the foundational positions of sex, which we’ll talk about in this piece. On the other hand, 75% of the positions in those books are not necessarily put in there for their ‘pleasure potential’ unless you’re someone who is a) an Olympic-level athlete and/or contortionist, or b) you basically hate working out and sex is the only physical thing you’ll do. Basically, I’m here to tell you that if you’re a sex newbie, never fear—you don’t have to be able to do the Butter Churner to be considered good in bed!

There are numerous GREAT positions for you to experiment with until you really like what you’re doing and feel comfortable, confident and sexy doing it. Of course, keep in mind that you may like some positions more than others and that’s okay! Everyone is different and that’s why there are so many ways to do the deed. That being said, below are the positions that are the building blocks to the more advanced…

Missionary Position

Missionary has a crappy name and an even crappier reputation as being the only position that old married people have sex in, but it’s really not as bad as they make it out to be. For the sex newbie, the missionary position can be an easy way to lie back and relax (literally) and get pleasured at the same time. It’s also super intimate because you and your partner can stare deeply into one another’s eyes. Try to avoid the “starfish” position, you want your partner to feel like you’re contributing. A little hip thrusting, leg wrapping and back scratching can make any missionary position session a little naughtier.

Variations: Legs up, partner off the bed, with a pillow under your hips.

Even hotter – add a vibrator like our favorite We-Vibe Tango!

Girl On Top

Editor’s Note: This position, as well as its other variations, tends to be referred to using gendered language. However, it’s a great position for any couple, regardless of gender.

Any variation of girl-on-top is fun when you’re a newbie because it gives you more control. Why would you want more control when you have no idea what you’re doing? If you’re with a well-endowed partner or just would rather go at your own pace, you get to time the rhythm. Also, it’s super empowering in an “I am Woman Hear Me Roar” kind of way. The best thing about you riding your partner is that you can do it virtually anywhere—the car, a chair or the couch. Let your partner have a seat while working your magic.

Variations: Reverse cowgirl (spin around and keep the dick still inside).

Spooning

Yeah, you heard me right. It’s like cuddling but with your partner’s dick inside of you. Spooning is pretty nice for beginners because your partner can’t go too deep and it’s a pretty relaxed position. You’re literally cuddling—so it’s probably one of the most stress-free positions out there.

Variations: Facing each other with your legs wrapped around.

Doggy Style

Like the missionary position, doggy style also has a terrible name, but this can be a fun position for beginners. As long as your partner goes S-L-O-W-L-Y and only goes as deep as is comfortable for you. When you start to get brave—arching your back can allow your partner to go deeper. Everyone likes feeling naughty, and this is the ultimate naughty position as your partner has direct access to slap that ass!

Variations: Standing up, on all fours, your knees on the bed while your partner stands behind.

Remember to use great lube! We recommend Wicked Aqua Lubricant.

69

While this isn’t a penetrative position per se, it’s still delightfully fun as a position for foreplay and oral sex. The idea with 69ing is that both partners can give and receive pleasure simultaneously. The easiest way to try this one is to lie on your side and have your partner lie on theirs and then proceed to suck, lick, or eat out.

Variations: A person with a vagina sitting on the other partner’s face (alternatively, this could work for ass to mouth).

The great thing about any of these positions is that there are endless variations to try and they’re super easy to mix and match with one another when you want to change it up a bit. They never go out of style and, honestly, most people will fall back on at least one of these positions no matter how many other crazy positions they try. Whether you’re a total newbie or just don’t have that much experience, maximize these positions for your ultimate pleasure potential!
